How to manage stress

As an architect, stress will be a big part of your life; the sooner you learn to manage it, the better. There’s no better way to start than when you’re in school. Don’t worry if you’re already done with school; these 8 tips on how to manage your stress as a student or young professional in the world of architecture, interior design, or any creative studies are valid for you too!

1. Plan Ahead: Create a realistic schedule and prioritize quality over quantity of work. Being realistic will reduce your mental load and enhance your efficiency.

2. Organize by Priorities: Start with what's most urgent and progressively move forward.

3. Identify Crucial Tasks: Focus on those that have the most impact. Avoid thinking about multiple things at once.

4. Divide and Conquer: When tackling a lengthy task, break it down into manageable stages. Avoid spreading yourself too thin and don't move on to another task without completing the previous one; it increases stress and significantly reduces efficiency.

5. Take Regular Breaks: Stretch, take deep breaths, or step outside for some fresh air. Not taking breaks is counterproductive; your brain needs rest. Avoid social media and screens, as they don't allow you to disconnect, and time spent on them can quickly become excessive.

6. Avoid Procrastination: Starting is often the hardest part. Once you're underway, you'll be more motivated. Stick to your schedule and identify when you're most productive. Respect your rhythm, and you'll be more focused and efficient.

7. Seek Support: Collaborate with people who can help, whether it's proofreading your work, listening to your ideas, or offering fresh perspectives. Find motivating individuals who can challenge you or share new insights. Your professors are there for you.

8. Take Care of Yourself: Get enough sleep, eat and drink healthily, exercise, and spend time outdoors. Allocate longer periods for yourself, apart from short breaks during your day. Plan activities that allow you to completely disconnect. All of this helps maintain a constant level of motivation and energy.


Remember that it's normal to feel stressed when you have a lot of work to complete in a short amount of time. Learn to manage it and put these strategies into practice. Never forget to trust yourself!
